How to Plan a Paver Patio in Utah, Step by Step
A paver patio is one of the highest impact upgrades you can make to a Utah home, but the projects that turn out best are the ones that were planned carefully before any excavation started.

Start With How You Will Use the Space
Before you look at paver colors, decide what the patio is for. A dining patio, a lounge area around a fire feature and a pool surround all need different dimensions and traffic flow. Write down the pieces of furniture you expect to place outside and the number of people you want to seat comfortably.
- Dining for six needs roughly 12 by 12 feet of clear space.
- A seating circle around a fire pit works best at 16 to 18 feet across.
- Leave at least 36 inches for walking paths between zones.
Check HOA Rules and Utility Locates Early
Many Utah subdivisions require design approval before hardscape work begins, and some limit impervious surface coverage. Ask your HOA for the written standard, then call Blue Stakes so utility lines are marked well ahead of the install date.
Plan Drainage Before You Plan Pattern
Water is what ruins patios in Utah, not foot traffic. Your patio should slope away from the house at roughly a quarter inch per foot, and downspouts should be routed past the paved area. Where grade changes are sharp, a low retaining wall is often cheaper and better looking than a steep slope.

Choose Materials That Handle Freeze and Thaw
Utah swings above and below freezing dozens of times each winter. Choose pavers rated for freeze thaw cycles, and expect a compacted road base of 6 to 8 inches for a patio and deeper where vehicles may cross. If you are comparing product families, our guide to concrete, brick and natural stone pavers breaks down the tradeoffs.
Sequence the Project in the Right Order
- Design consultation and measurements on site.
- Layout, material selection and written scope.
- Excavation, grading and drainage work.
- Base installation and compaction.
- Paver laying, cutting, edge restraint and joint sand.
- Add on features such as seat walls, lighting and fire elements.
Time the Build for Utah Weather
Spring and fall are the busiest windows, so schedule early. Installation can continue into cold weather as long as the ground is workable. You can see finished projects across the state in our gallery, and check coverage on the areas we serve page.
